2013 Highlights, Strange Sights and Memorable Bites Part 3 - A Reindeer Feast (Shhh Don't Tell Santa)
I think I've been pretty good in 2013.
Well, for the most part.
So I'm hoping this Finnish-inspired meal enjoyed some time earlier this year won't stop Santa from paying me a visit at Christmas. Although, given what was on the menu, he may have to find some alternative transportation!
The idea of a reindeer menu began last winter when my cousin bought a can of reindeer meat back from a trip somewhere Scandinavian. We thought eating it at Christmas might be a little in bad taste so the can was saved for another day.
What started of as just a can of reindeer meat then expanded considerably (as most of our meals do) into a reindeer feast - reindeer pate, reindeer sausage, reindeer meatballs, even reindeer steak - all washed down with some cloudberry cordial and Kopparberg cider.
The reindeer wasn't remarkable for being different - it does taste very much like beef or perhaps venison, with it's slightly gamey flavour. But it's a tasty meat to grace your dinner table this festive season if you were thinking of swapping the turkey for something different.
(Just make sure you stick to the usual milk and cookies for Santa and don't make him a sandwich from the leftovers)
Merry Christmas everyone. Here's to a whole new year of platetrotting! :)
